Alicante (Alacant in Valencian) is the second largest conurbation in the Comunitat Valenciana, an autonomous region in Eastern Spain. The metropolitan area is home to some 430,000 people, rising to 750,000 in the entire Alacant/Elx (Alicante/Elche) region. The existing diesel operated line between Alicante and Denia is being upgraded (double track) and electrified as far as Altea, with an urban tram service up to El Campello.
