Until 2007, Line 10 was the only metro line serving Chamartín, Madrid's second mainline station. The new complex provides for a total of four metro lines serving this transport hub in the future. The Line 10 station is on level -2, and the Line 1 station perpendicularly to it on level -4, with a mezzanine between them.

   Nuevos Ministerios

10-06-1982

The original Line 8 from Fuencarral to Nuevos Ministerios was extended single-track to Avenida de América in 1986 to improve transfer options for this line. This link has been out-of-service since 1998.

   Gregorio Marañón

08-01-1998

Gregorio Marañón station was built on the linking section between Nuevos Ministerios (on the former Line 8) and Alonso Martínez (former terminus of Line 10). It was built together with the Line 7 western extension, so transfer between both lines is provided via one escalator.

   Alonso Martínez

18-12-1981

In 2002, the section from Alonso Martínez to Príncipe Pío was rebuilt for large-profile rolling stock, which included the widening of tunnels and extension of some platforms.

In 2002, the former 3-platform layout was modified for two side platforms to allow the use of large-profile rolling stock.

   Príncipe Pío

26-12-1996

In the early 1990s, the section between Lago and Príncipe Pío was rebuilt with new tunnels under the River Manzanares to provide cross-platform interchange between Line 10 and Line 6. Line 10 uses the outer platform edges.

L10

   Lago

04-02-1961

In 2002, the original surface station had to be rebuilt and the additional island platform demolished to allow for the use of large-profile rolling stock. The emblematic entrance building was preserved.

   Batán

04-02-1961

As at Lago, the former island platform at this original 'Suburbano' surface station was demolished and the side platforms widened in 2002

   Casa de Campo

22-10-2002

Planned as Puerta de Batán, Casa de Campo station was added along the original 'Suburbano' to provide interchange between Line 5 and Line 10, the latter being extended at the same time towards Alcorcón and MetroSur.

Line 10 stops on the outer tracks, whereas Line 5 terminates on a single track in the middle, providing convenient transfer in both directions.

   Colonia Jardín

22-10-2002

Since 2007, Colonia Jardín has functioned as an interchange between the 'real' metro and the new 'Metro Ligero', a kind of modern tramway running partly underground and partly on the surface with a few level crossings. At Colonia Jardín the tram's terminus is on the level of the vestibule.

Special Features of Line 10:

Total length: 40 km, 31 stations (2007)

Large profile line with 110 m long platforms (6-car trains of class 7000 in service) - 1500 V dc

This line was originally built as a suburban rail line (formerly line S) from Plaza de España to Carabanchel and therefore still has a very suburban character from Lago to Casa de Campo (above ground alongside the Casa de Campo park). Finally the extension project 1995-1999 included the connection of former line 8 (Fuencarral - Nuevos Ministerios - Av. América) and this line to create a cross-city line, which was initially operated with small-profile rolling stock. At Gregorio Marañón an interchange with Line 7 was built.

In 2000-2001, the tunnel profile between Plaza de España and Alonso Martínez was widened in order to use large-profile rolling stock (2.8 m wide and 110 m long). To do so also the surface section between Lago and Batán had to be rebuilt. Therefore this section was closed from July 2000 until April 2001. In the underground stations (Alonso Martínez, Tribunal and Plaza de España) platforms were lengthened by 20 m and in all stations the central platform was demolished. At the same time the line was extended south by 7 km to connect it with L-12 MetroSur. The former Line 10 section between Batán and Aluche was integrated in Line 5 from 22-10-2002, which now terminates at Casa de Campo. Since Oct. 2002, Line 10 has been operated with large-profile trains, and it has since become one of the busiest lines of the network.

In 2003-2007, Line 10 was extended towards the north beyond the Madrid city boundaries. The last station in Madrid is that at Ronda de la Comunicación, then there are four stations in Alcobendas, and three in San Sebastián de los Reyes. The northern extension is branded Metronorte, although it is a normal line extension. At Tres Olivos passengers have to transfer to line 10b, which will operate with shorter trains at longer intervals, similar to Line 9 south of Puerta de Arganda. Eventually the northern section may become a part of Line 14, for which a station has already been built at Chamartín.
