Metros in Holland


The Dutch city of Utrecht has one 'Sneltram' line, running from the Centraal Station south to Nieuwegein (line 60), with a branch to IJsselstein (line 61). There are no underground sections, but the route is entirely on a separate right-of-way with several level crossings.

Operated by Qbuzz; 1435 mm gauge, high platforms


1983: Utrecht Moreelse Park - Nieuwegein-Zuid / Nieuwegein Doorslag
1985: Nieuwegein Doorslag - IJsselstein Achterveld
2000: IJsselstein Achterveld - IJsselstein-Zuid
2009: Utrecht Moreelse Park stop cancelled
22-04-2013: new terminus on Jaarbeursplein on western side of Centraal Station (temporary terminus while station reconstruction is going on)

The Uithoflijn, a low-floor light rail line is under construction from Centraal Station to Uithof, in the east of the city, bypassing the city centre on the southern side: 7.5 km, 9 stops >
Q3/2019: Vaartsche Rijn - P+R De Uithof
Dec 2019: Utrecht Centaal Jaarbeursplein - Vaartsche Rijn

By 2019, the existing line is planned to be converted to low-floor operation to be linked to the new Uithof line.
