launched, without intermediate stops Construction of the mostly underground Line 5 was launched in Sept. 2023: 20 km west-east connecting Hemayetpur to Vatara, with 13.5 km underground (9 stations) and 6.5 km elevated (5 stations). On 16 Nov 2021, the Dhaka Tribune reports: Dhaka metro rail to carry passengers by December 2022 - The first ever metro rail of the country will begin carrying passengers in the capital by December 2022 with the Uttara North-Agargaon stretch, Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL)Managing Director MAN Siddique said on Tuesday. The DMTCL is the implementing body of the project. All the relevant test runs on the Uttara North-Agargaon segment of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line-6, which will run from Uttara North-Kamalapur, and other work is expected to be completed by that time, he said.
On 27 Jun 2016, Railway Gazette reports: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina officially inaugurated construction of the first metro line in Dhaka on June 26 at a ceremony also attended by Minister for Road Transport & Bridges Obaidul Quader and Japanese Ambassador Masato Watanabe. Hasina had previously laid the foundation stone for Line 6 on October 31 at 2013. Work is split into six civils and two railway systems packages. The project is being managed by the Communications Ministry’s Dhaka Transport Co-ordination Authority, and a consortium of Nippon Koei, Delhi Metro Rail Corp, Mott Macdonald and Development Design Consultants is acting as general consultant. Services would be operated by Dhaka Mass Transit Co. The government is providing 53·9bn taka of the 219·85bn taka project cost, with the remainder coming from JICA under a 40-year soft loan agreement signed in 2013. JICA expects to disburse the first quarter of the loan this year. The 20 km elevated north-south route will link Uttara North and Motijheel. There would be a depot beyond Uttara North at the northern end of the line. The line would be overhead electrified at 1·5 kV DC and all 16 stations would have platform edge doors. A fleet of 24 six-car trainsets is to be procured; bids were due by June 15. The rolling stock would have a maximum speed of 100 km/h, giving an end-to-end journey time of 38 min. Peak headways of 5 min are envisaged. Trial operation on the northern part of the route is expected by the end of 2019, with the full line open in 2024. Ridership is forecast at 483 000 passengers per day in 2021, rising to 1·3 million in 2051. Line 6 is the first of three planned lines. A feasibility studies for lines 1 and 5 is currently underway. On 1 Nov 2013, Railway Gazette reports: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone for the Dhaka metro on October 31 at Bhawal Badre Alam University College Ground. The project is to be developed with Japanese assistance, following the signing of a 40-year soft loan agreement with JICA in February valued at ¥10·477bn. The first line to be built, designated Line 6, would run from Uttara North to Bangladesh Bank in Motijheel via Pallabi, Hotel Sonargaon, Ruposhi Bangla, Doel Chattar and Topkhana Road. The 20·1 km north-south route would be elevated and have 16 stations. According to the government’s Planning Division, the line is to be constructed in three phases. The 11 km from Pallabi to Sonargaon Hotel is due to be completed by 2019, the 4·4 km from Sonargaon Hotel to Bangladesh Bank is scheduled for 2020 and the 4·7 km Uttara – Pallabi section for 2022. The project is being managed by the Communications Ministry’s Dhaka Transport Co-ordination Authority. Services would be operated by Dhaka Mass Transit Co.
